 The Five Tenets Of Taekwondo

Taekwondo isn't just a sport, it is a way of life. This implied by two simple letters 'Do', which means 'The Art' or 'The Way'.

Without the correct mental attitude, Taekwondo training will only encourage arrogance, egotism, and ultimately self-destruction.

The ultimate purpose of Taekwondo is the development of healthy bodies and the virtues of modesty, valour, wisdom, kindness, justice, courtesy and perseverance. From this we extract the Five Tenets of Taekwondo.

 Modesty
Not to be vain or boastful. To be honest with ourselves.

 Etiquette
To be polite and to show respect to our instructor, seniors and fellow students. To be polite and show respect to our family members

 Perseverance
To keep making the effort despite difficulties. To never give up.

 Self Control
It can be dangerous to lose our temper at any time, especially with the knowledge we have, it shows lack of control and respect for our art. We must also try to develop the ability to show restraint and compassion in other areas. We must try to learn to ask ourselves if it is always wise to say what is on our minds. We must be able to live, work and train within our capabilities. This shows good self control

 Indomitable Spirit
To show courage when we are faced against overwhelming odds. To have strength of mind always.
